In 1929, in the year that Catherine Lesnefsky was born, on October 29th (Black Tuesday), the stock market crashed in the United States. Billions of dollars were lost and some investors committed suicide as a result, having lost their fortunes. This ushered in the 12 year, worldwide Great Depression.
Did you know?
In 1941, Catherine was just 12 years old when on December 7th, the Japanese attacked the military base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The surprise aerial attack damaged 8 U.S. battleships (6 later returned to service), including the USS Arizona, and destroyed 188 aircraft. 2,402 American citizens died and 1,178 wounded were wounded. On December 8th, the U.S. declared war on Japan and on December 11th, Germany and Italy (allies of Japan) declared war on the United States. World War II was in full swing.

The Dirty Thirties - The Dust Bowl
From the early 1930s through 1940, the Great Plains of the United States and Canada were devastated by dust storms, causing great economic and social anguish. Just mention the term 'Dust Bowl' and your mind immediately goes to the severe dust storms that impacted the American and Canadian prairies of the 1930s. Many farmers left their family farms and simply picked up and moved, leaving everything behind. When you see what these people faced and how they endured, you might begin to understand why.
