Her courage in emigrating from Ireland to the goldfields in Australia after the famine , bearing 12 children and becoming the matriarch of a flourishing family. She was my great-grandmother . On arrival she married Edmund Byrne, my great-grandfather. My father's name was Edmund.. My name is Katherine (Byrne).

My grandfather Richard Byrne was the youngest of the 14. He was unknown to our family, as he left the family home he shared with my grandmother Mary Byrne (Murnane), when my father (also Edmund) was 2 years old..Mary Murnane had 2 more children (girls) with a Mr Chapman, of Ballarat. My father, Edmund Aloysius Byrne, was sent to Cowangie in the Mallee, to be reared by his maternal grandparents .He subsequently lived in Mildura with my mother Margaret Byrne (Heenan.) He died in 1958, aged 57. I am researching Richard Byrne, to try to restore my grandfather to our family; my father was told as a child that he was dead. He was very much alive. I have his WW! service record.. Do any of the Ballarat Byrnes, or descendants of Edmund Byrne and Catherine Trait, have family photos which might include my grandfather Richard?. Many of Edmund and Catherine's children died young, of in childhood, but there must at least one p;hoto of the surviving siblings. I am now 75, in poor health, and dearly wish to see an image of my grandfather, and perhaps make contact with any of the Byrne/Ballarat Byrnes. By the way, do others know the amazing story of why so many male Byrnes are named Edmund, both here, and in the U.S. ? I would be happy to share it, if I make contact.
