Cecil Edgar Hopgood of Berwick, City of Casey County, VIC Australia was born in 1882 in Lorne, Surf Coast Shire County to Robert Alfred Hopgood and Mary Ann (Ley) Hopgood. He had siblings Alice May (Hopgood) Clissold, Louise Annie Hopgood, Wilfred Ernest Hopgood, Leonard William Hopgood, Alfred Robert Hopgood, Jessie Ann Hopgood, Rose Elizabeth Hopgood, and Elsie Florence Hopgood. Cecil Hopgood married Mary Murnane in 1903, and died at age 83 years old on November 6, 1966 in Berwick, City of Casey County.

It lit one square mile of lower Manhattan and was powered by coal. The "electrical age" had begun.

In 1894, Cecil was just 12 years old when large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.
