He married Mary Jane (Harvey) Routley in 1898, and had children Pearl Ann Routley, Joseph Alfred Routley, Violet Margaret Routley, Henry Richard Routley, and Queenie May Routley. Charles Routley died at age 35 years old on December 30, 1908 in Geelong.

In 1881, by the time he was merely 8 years old, on April 28th, Billy the Kid escaped from the Lincoln County Jail in New Mexico. He killed James Bell and Robert Ollinger in the escape and then stole a horse and rode out of town. On July 14th, Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid in Billy's friend's home near Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
