Charles enlisted in the Royal Marines before WW1.
He was an exceptional artillery gunner and rose through the ranks to become the senior gunner aboard HMS Queen Mary.
He was responsible for the very high standard of gunnery aboard Queen Mary and for his abilities was known as Cats Eyes Catley.
Sadly, along with over1200 officers and men, he was killed in action at Jutland in 1916 when Queen Mary was sunk by enemy action.
