Charlie (PawPaw) was married to my grandmother Wilma Ardeth Skomp Alvey. Skomp is her maiden name. They were married for over 20 yrs. He left grandma in the 1970's for Mounds Illinois and he never came back except for 2 visits that I can remember. They never divorced.
He adopted my older sister Maria when she was in kindergarten. I lived with him also. When he left, my grandma raised us by herself. She never re married. I know Paw Paw had a girlfriend but I don't know what her name was. He had a drinking problem so it's possible that alcoholism runs in the Mason line.
Grandma was not nice to him. I don't know why he stayed with her for as long as he did. I remember him getting physical with her one time. I was very small. It was scary.
He retired from Jeff Boat in Jeffersonville, IN. Not sure what his title was there. He would come home and sit at the kitchen table where we had a 13 in tv for him and he would watch his ball games (baseball) with a Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.
We never met any of his biological family that I know of. I was younger than 10 then, so I probably wouldn't remember. I know I loved him but was scared of him. He didn't "like" me. When my grandmother took me in it caused my older sister to get fewer things. Before me if she wanted something, PawPaw would make sure she got it. He loved her. Of course, I didn't learn any of that until much later.
He drove a yellow and white truck with a camper on top. We loved going for rides in the back. He had a bed back there for us.
