He had siblings Beatrice Elsie Marion Hocking, Frank Noel Rayment Hocking, Arthur Henry Hocking, Leslie George Hocking, William Eric Hocking, and Herbert John Hocking. Charles Hocking married Marjorie Hillier Clements in 1936, and died at age 84 years old on March 16, 1987 in Surrey Hills, VIC.

In 1902, in the year that Charles Edgar Hocking was born, the world famous Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, made the first gramophone recording by a popular singer. Accompanied by only a piano, his voice recordings became a big seller and did much to popularize the new-fangled gramophone. He had to sing into a metal "horn" that relayed his voice to a metal disc. And the songs had to be under 4 and a half minutes!

In 1923, at the age of 21 years old, Charles was alive when on November 8th and 9th, Adolf Hitler and his followers (the early Nazi party) staged the "Beer Hall Putsch" in Munich in an attempt to take over Bavaria (a state in Germany). They failed. Hitler was charged with treason and convicted, receiving a sentence of 5 years. He served under 1 year in jail.
