Charles Edward Devon Crees of Windsor, VIC Australia was born in 1897 in Ballarat East, City of Ballarat County to Cecilia Braybrook Crees and Thomas Richardson Crees. He had siblings Percy William Owen Dreadn Crees, Dorothy Esther Frances Crees, Thomas Richard Crees, Mary Jane Shirley Crees, Robert Edgar Chester Crees, Muriel Constance Crees, Christina Marjory Crees, and Alfred George Rodney Crees. He married Ellen Guthrie in 1919, and had a child Mavis Adeline Crees. Charles Crees died at age 64 years old in 1961 in Windsor.

In 1897, in the year that Charles Edward Devon Crees was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

In 1918, at the age of 21 years old, Charles was alive when in January, President Wilson presented his Fourteen Points, which assured citizens that World War I was being fought for a moral cause and outlined a plan for postwar peace in Europe. The only leader of the Allies to present such a plan, the Europeans thought Wilson was being too idealistic. The points included free trade, open agreements, democracy and self-determination. They were based on the research and suggestions of 150 advisors.
