Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.

In 1969, in August, a previously planned small concert turned into a (free) more than 400,000 strong gathering of attendees and bands at Max Yasgur's farm in upstate New York - now called Woodstock. In 1982, on June 30th, time ran out on the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The Amendment had only received 35 of the necessary 38 state ratifications.
