Charles worked for Andrew Newell, Samuel Hooper and Samuel Stevens, American Merchants. The Herald, Melbourne. 23rd September 1899. THE FAMILY CIRCLE. ........-DEATH-........ DURHAM, Charles J., the beloved husband of Jane Durham, father of C. J., and A. G. and Mrs. R. H. Walters; 27 years rate collector of South Melbourne, passed away to-day, at his late residence, Hoxton Villa, Bridport street, Albert Park. Highly respected by all who knew him. May his soul rest in peace. The Record, Emerald Hill. 30th September 1899. DEATH OF MR. C. J. DURHAM. The old indentities of the city are passing away. It is our painful duty this week to record the death of Mr. C. J. Durham, who expired at his residence in Bridport Street, on Saturday afternoon last. Although the deceased gentleman has been under the constant care of Dr. Ford for some weeks past, it was not apprehended that his condition was so serious as to cause unusual anxiety, and as a consequence the news of his death came as an unexpected shock to citizens and those by whom he was known. He was an Englishman by birth, and landed in Melbourne 47 years ago. For a time he was engaged in clerical duties by the firm of Newell, Hooper and Stevens, American Merchants, then as a news agent until the time of his appointment as rate collector, over the past 27 years during which time no less than £557000, passed through his hands to the coffers of the municipality. Mr. Durham's remains were interred in the St. Kilda Cemetery. A large number of vehicles joined in the cortege, which included two mourning coaches and special carriages conveying the Mayor, City Councillors and officers of the Corporation. Mr. John Allison carried out the mortuary arrangements in a very capable manner. Mr. Durham was 68 years of age, and leaves behind a wife and three married children to mourn the loss of a loving husband and devoted father.
