Charles John Huffam Dickens 1812 - 1870

Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Landport, Portsmouth England to Elizabeth (Barrow) Dickens and John Dickens, and had siblings Frances Elizabeth (Dickens) Burnett, Frederick William Dickens, Alfred Lamert Dickens, Augustus Newnham Dickens, Letitia Dickens, Harriet Dickens, and Alfred Allen Dickens. He married Catherine Thomson (Hogarth) Dickens on April 2, 1836 and they later separated in 1858. They had children Charles Culliford Boz Dickens, Jr., Mary Mamie Dickens, Kate (Dickens) Perugini, Walter Savage Landor Dickens, Francis Jeffrey Dickens, Alfred D'Orsay Tennyson Dickens, Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens, Henry Fielding Dickens, Dora Annie Dickens, and Edward Bulwer Lytton Dickens. Charles' partner was Ellen Ternan in 1857, and they were together until Charles' death on June 9, 1870.

In 1827, he was just 15 years old when on May 25th, Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru received a French patent for the invention of the first fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge. The fountain pen would make inkwells obsolete. Poenaru's patent used a barrel made from a large swan quill (part of the feather).
