Kelly was the son of Charles Kelly Castleberry, Sr who left this earth on Thursday, October 29, 2020 to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He died as he had lived, in divine favor. Charles and his family have lived in the Brazosport area for 60 years. Charles was born in Vernon, Texas and grew up farming with his family on the Peas e River. He graduated from Oklaunion High School, where he was one of 10 in his graduating class. He played every sport and was actively involved in the FFA program. Charles attended Baylor University and graduated in 1958. While at Baylor, Charles majored in Political Science. He played football, and was involved in the Chamber and various other organizations. He met his wife, Phyllis, at Training Union at 7th and James Baptist Church. They were married by Johnny Beard in the summer of 1958 at the First Baptist Church in Lake Jackson. Charles and Phyllis moved to Quantico, Virginia so Charles could attend Officer Training School for the United States Marine Corps. After serving as an officer in the Marine Corps, they moved to Lake Jackson, Texas. They raised four kids and were very involved in their community and church. Charles held many positions in the Brazosport Chamber of Commerce including the office of president three times. He was a member of the Board of Realtors and started American Realty where he worked until he passed. He taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church for 45 years and was a deacon and served on many committees. He loved the church family and cherished his time with them. Charles was a straight arrow and an example for all. He always dressed in a suit and said, “You never have a second chance to make a first impression.” He loved Jesus and knew the Bible like the back of his hand. Every card he sent and every weekly sales meetings that he led were sprinkled with wisdom from the Bible. He loved to laugh and had a gift of nicknaming most anyone whom he knew. He invested his time in people by calling to “just to check in.” We will all miss these calls and the chance to catch up. Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Jeanne Pratt Castleberry; son, Charles “Kelly” Castleberry, Jr.; grandson, Carlton Kell Palmer; and grandson, Kevin Alan Castleberry. Charles was survived by his son, Keary Castleberry (wife, Cathy) and their four children and three grandchildren; daughter, Renae Palmer (husband, Ray) and their three children; and daughter, Ashby Berryhill (husband, Bill) and their four children. Surviving him as well is Kelly’s son, Grant Castleberry (wife, Grace Anna) and their four children. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Shaaron Pratt Rowland, of Vidor, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many loving friends. A memorial and celebration was held on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at First Baptist Church, Lake Jackson, Texas at 11:00 a.m. and was followed by a lunch/reception in the Family Life Center. Charles was laid to rest in the Castleberry Family “Amen” Cemetery in Wilbarger County in North Texas. Amen is a quiet, peaceful parcel of the “old home place” overlooking the Red River. In 2004, Charles Snr received a heart transplant. The Brazosport Facts, Nov 7, 2020
