  • Introduction

Charles Masaru Kansaku was born on May 18, 1927 in Hilo Hawaii to parents Kanichi Robert Kansaku (1901-1944) and Mary Ka (1906-1989). He grew up in Hilo with siblings Clarence Minoru, Robert Kansaku Jr, Harry Y, William, and Marian H Kansaku. Charles was an American military veteran who served in the United States Armed Forces during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. On January 16, 1946, Charles officially began his military service, just a few months after his enlistment. His service record shows that he did not have a branch assignment at the time. It is possible that he was undergoing training or awaiting assignment to a specific unit. During his service, on November 12, 1949 he married May Fujiko Matsuzaki (1924–2000) in San Francisco, California, USA. The couple lived in Fairfield, Solano, California, USA and they had three children together. Over the course of his military career, Charles served in the United States Air Force and achieved the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (SMSGT). He served in three different wars: World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. His service ended on July 31, 1969, after more than 23 years of service to his country.

In 1931, at the age of only 4 years old, Charles was alive when on May 1st, the Empire State Building opened in New York City. At 1,454 feet (including the roof and antenna), it was the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center's North Tower was built in 1970. (It is now the 34th tallest.) Opening at the beginning of the Great Depression, most of the offices in the Empire State Building remained unoccupied for years and the observation deck was an equal source of revenue and kept the building profitable.
