  • Introduction

"TOM" was a purple Heart recipient that volunteered to help the people in Vietnam in a time when many were running away from the huge responsibility .The first time I met Tom (as he called himself in 1983) he was near the train tracks in Newark Delaware with his 2 Sheep dogs (as nearly always )Arden and Brava who also would respond to dog A and dog B or "alpha " and "Beta". I think tis had significance to his Vietnam experience Went by his middle name "Tom", which separated him from a little of the confusion of famous other Vietnam veteran Charlie Daniels from Texas . Tom had a great sense of humor and was an awesome story teller he would draw things in diagrams at a big hallowed out wooden tree stun he used as a table , He described to me that he was in a jeep in Vietnam i think he said 1967 because i think i remember saying " that was before i was born " when the jeep he was traveling in hit a mine ... he told me that when he came to consciousness he could not remember even who his mother was at first , he had a pond handlebar mustache that did not hide the sharp diving scar on his lip and another huge scar on his forehead ?( also covered with pulled back tied long hair . I remember I was 15 and he showed me photos of him going in service with horse on shield symbol looking innocent and insnared by war and smiled and said " isn't that neat " i said " your licky to be alive and with a grandfather like semi giggle then said " We are A L L lucky to be alive . I was looking at the difference in the two faces the scared one in front of me and the one in the photograph . He described that he still had headaches that didn't get much better no matter what he did . When I wrecked my first car and thought it was the end of the world he was smiling in amusement to his brother Richard Daniels ( who i had bought a few guitar books of ) . He was great with people and reassured them a lot but it was easy to see in every visit his family loved him and was greatly worried deep inside for him , indeed they had nearly lost him and the recovery from amnesia to reassuring encourager he was must have been quite a path . aI believe he told me he gave his purple heat back... many years later i visited him with my wife at that time in about 1990 , he had a girlfriend who had a brother who was missing in action in Vietnam and she described to me the pain of not having any closure , i could see Tom was deeply supportive and cared a great deal for her feelings and did something i have tried to learn from ... he just intently with all his focus listened .
