Charley James' History: 1925 - 2007

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

Charley James was one of the most colorful men anyone ever knew. He remains one of the most wonderful characters from my childhood when he visited my father's shop in Seminole. He always laughed even at the darkest subject. That was Charley's gift. He could take an awkward moment and turn it right around so that everyone laughed. Each time he brought in his beautiful Cadillac for work, he made sure he spent time with everyone telling stories, swapping lies, and laughing about the consequences. It's true that he worked for Southwestern Bell for 30 years starting as a janitor then retiring as one of the telephone men who worked the county for the telephone company. Before that, he was a soldier during one of the darkest periods of modern American and world history. Before he went into the service, he worked various jobs as a kid around town. The one story I recall most was him being a porter at the Worth Hotel on Broadway during Seminole's oil field heyday. By the time I came along, he was well known for selling fireworks in front of my aunt's house on the old highway south of town. Both he and his wife showed up every single year for the Fourth of July season and were the absolute nicest people a kid could ever meet. I think of him often because he was a fixture around town. Ask anyone and they all knew him and everyone loved Charley.
