November 9th blackout on the northeast of the United States.
On November 9, 1965 it was Charlotte DeFeo's birthday whom was my mother. We surprised her with a birthday cake and right after she blew out the candles on the cake all the lights went out in the house. We thought it was some kind of joke, maybe someone playing a practical joke but the lights didn't come back on when I flipped the switch. I was only ten yrs old but old enough to go down stairs to check the rest of the house and fuse but when I looked outside all the street lights were out, then I noticed all the homes on our street had no lights. I panicked and ran upstairs being scared to death. When I got upstairs the family was listening intently to a transistor radio and the look on their faces would scare you like it did me. I heard the faint voice through the crackling interference say all the power went out on the whole east coast all the way to Canada. My brother being the joker he is yells out "The world is ending" and I cried so much until my mom Charlotte told me that he was teasing me and everything is okay even though she really didn't know that for sure yet. Apparently it only lasted fourteen hours but I had eaten A piece of my favorite food, A slice of birthday cake and fell asleep not long after. What a crazy, scary, yet entertaining night, my mother's birthday cake, she blew out the candles and the whole east coast and part of Canada. Wow !!
