Clara Marie (Zulke) Zirk of Elgin, Kane County, Illinois was born on December 24, 1896. She married Harry Herman Zirk, and they had children Betty Zirk Raywood, Irene Zirk, and Dorthy Zirk. She married Alpha Ray Edwards, and they had a child Violet Emily Edwards Czischki. Clara Zirk died at age 75 years old in May 1972.

In 1896, in the year that Clara Edwards Zirk was born, in April, the first study on global warming due to CO2 - carbon dioxide - in the atmosphere was published by Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius. Arrhenius concluded that human activity due to the Industrial Revolution would amplify CO2 in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect. His conclusions have been extensively tested in the ensuing 100+ years and are still seen to hold true.

In 1915, Clara was 19 years old when The Birth of a Nation opened in February. A silent film, it was the most ambitious film to date and is considered a classic. Three hours long, it starred Lillian Gish and was directed by D. W. Griffith. The movie was based on the book The Clansman and told the story of two families (one pro-Union and one pro-Confederate) and their relationship during the Civil War and Reconstruction. The KKK was shown as "a heroic force".
