Clarence Vaubel was born on August 2, 1887 in Mapleton, Minnesota United States to John Vaubel and Caroline Gruer Vaubel, and had siblings Clayton Vaubel, Mary (Vaubel ) Jakobe, Anne Vaubel, Trassy Vaubel, Sophie Vaubel, John H. Vaubel, Edward Vaubel, and Lilly Vaubel. Clarence Vaubel died at age 104 years old in 1991.

In 1887, in the year that Clarence Vaubel was born, on May 9th, Buffalo Bill's Wild West show opened in London. Founded in 1883, the show was attended - twice - by Queen Victoria and adored by audiences who thrilled to his fanciful acts portraying life in the "Wild West."

In 1903, when he was 16 years old, two brothers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, flew the first powered heavier-than-air plane. They flew 4 times in one day - the longest flight lasting 59 seconds and a little over 852 feet. While the brothers had notified several newspapers of their attempt, only one - a local paper - covered it. After their 4th flight, a gust of wind caught the plane, turned it over, and totaled it.
