    Clark Marion Lyback was born to Hans Hanson Lyback (1873 - 1959) and Klara Augusta Kristiansdatter Brandvik (1883 - 1941) on November 29th, 1916 in Wahkon, Minnesota and he had four siblings: Harold, Kathryn, Evelyn, and Edward. On his World War II, Clark described himself as being six feet two inches tall and as weighing 200 pounds. He had gray eyes, brown hair, and a "ruddy" complexion. Clark Lyback married Phyllis Marie Kaushagen (1921 - 2009). A veteran, Clark served in the United States Army as a TEC4 during World War II.

In 1916, in the year that Clark Lyback was born, in June, the U.S. Congress authorized a plan to expand the armed forces over the next five years. Called the National Defense Act of 1916, the national law expanded the National Guard and Army (the Army added an aviation unit), created the Reserves, and gave the President expanded authority to federalize the National Guard. It also allowed the government to stockpile, in advance, materiel to be used in wartime.
