    Clayton Edward Ottmers was born on May 23, 1923 in Fredericksburg, Gillespie, Texas to parents Arthur Leopold Ottmers (1898-1970) and Cora Ann Olga Ellebracht (1900-1938). He had siblings Vernell Erna (1928-1977), Rosalie Cora (1930-1934), and William A Ottmers (1938-1938). He attended and was a 1941 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas, USA. At the age of 19, he registered for the draft on June 30, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas. At the time of registration, he was employed by P.B. Thomson and resided in San Antonio, Texas. On December 8, 1942, Clayton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned the rank of Corporal (CPL). He served during World War II and was discharged from the military on January 22, 1946, after serving in the Marine Corps for over three years. He was married a few times in his life. He married Ida Erline Morrow (1923–1965) on November 13, 1948. They were married until her passing on September 28, 1965. Clayton then married Marie Mumme on July 2, 1966 in Bexar County, Texas and married Virginia E. Cooper on November 19, 1977 in Bexar County and they later separated on July 6, 1984.
