  • Introduction

My Father was on the same training course as Colin Hogg and records the following in his memoir. "Early one morning, about 05.30 am, Colin in the next bed to me in our hut of 24 trainees aircrew, got up to go to the cookhouse for breakfast. He was on early flying detail at 07.00 hours. He had been looking forward to his last flight as a trainee bomb aimer. " Bring us back some char (tea)", I said, holding out my mug. He returned after a while and gave me my tea and a bacon sandwich. Then, picking up his flying helmet, he was off. all he had to do was a couple of exams and then back to the UK. Entering the billet just before dinner time I saw an officer and a sergeant packing his belongings into his kit bag. Not realising what had happened, I said to the sergeant, " Is he leaving?". "He's dead" ,said the sergeant. "The plane crashed this morning over the bombing range". I went outside and told the other chaps as they came towards the billet. That night there was a very quiet set of lads who slept next to the empty bed. He was buried with full military honours with his friends firing three volleys of blank shot into the air over his grave and the station bugler sounding the Last Post.
