He married Maria (Jacobs) VandeHey on January 30, 1837 in Zeeland, Noord Brabant County, and they were married until Maria's death on January 9, 1883. He had a child Henrica (VanDeHey) Jansen. Cornelius VandeHey died at age 82 years old on March 13, 1894 in Little Chute, Outagamie County, Wisconsin USA, and was buried at St. John Cemetery in Little Chute.

    Tuesday, March 13, Cornelius Van der Hei, age 83, died in Little Chute. He was one of the oldest inhabitants there. The deceased was born in Zeeland, North Brabant and came with Father Van den Broeck to America. Burial Saturday morning from St. John's Church.

In 1811, in the year that Cornelius John VandeHey was born, on July 9th, British explorer, surveyor, and fur trader David Thompson posted a notice at the junction of the Columbia River and the Snake River - in modern-day Washington- claiming the area for the United Kingdom and stating the intention of the North West Company to build a trading post there. The trading post was built several years later.

In 1838, Cornelius was 27 years old when on February 24th, Representatives William J. Graves (Kentucky) and Jonathan Cilley (Maine) fought a duel with rifles. They faced off at 94 yards. Cilley was hit on Graves' third try - in the femoral artery - and bled to death on the dueling field. The Panic of 1837 and Jackson's presidency had caused an extremely partisan Congress and the duel was a result.
