I worked with Damon at Basie's on Broadway from 1981-83 before the restaurant closed down. Damon was the most distinguished person of his time.
He was so cool and collected. A suave and debonair individual. We became good friends but sadly, never kept in touch after 1983 until one day I discovered he was in an accident and was debilitated. I then reconnected with Him and went on several outings to Bennigan's for lunch and spirits.
I was married at the time and got caught up in that arena and hit a small hiatus from Damon. I had time to go see Damon and went to see how he was doing. Mrs. DRAKE answered the front door and that's when I was told Damon had passed.
I was absolutely devastated. Outside My family, Damon was one of the very few people I adored. He was funny and real.
My condolences to the Drake family. Mrs. DRAKE and Damon.
