I could write about Dana's successful Oakbrook business or his yacht at his summer home in New Buffalo, Michigan, but those are just things. I met Dana in 1963 at Sandburg Junior High School in Elmhurst, Illinois.

In 1965 my oldest friend, Scott White, and I were walking home from high school when we ran into Dana. Scott was already breaking records on the track team, and I was becoming known since appearing in a high school play. Dana made us a simple proposal, "If we get the right people together we could run York High School by the time we are seniors." And that is exactly what happened! The stories from those days still bring a smile to the face of this 71 year old.

Of all the things that Dana Bauchwitz accomplished his favorite memory was the day he sat in the White House sharing a drink with then President Ronald Reagan. You just don't see natural leaders like Dana J. Bauchwitz in 21st century America.

According to a high school friend who shares his memories about Dana Bauchwitz (1949-1996), when they graduated in 1967 Dana "was a people magnet and seemed to magically form a group around himself that became known as 'The Baucho Group'".

He went on to say that "It was a magical time for those of us who lived it." Dana's success followed him throughout life and he went on to become a personal friend of President Ronald Reagan.

Dana Bauchwitz was an amazing person at York High School in Elmhurst, Illinois. He was a people magnet and seemed to magically form a group around himself that became known as "The Baucho Group." The group was not a clique, but was open to anyone who liked to party, and enjoyed fun girls. It was a magical time for those of us who lived it. Dana went on after school to create a number of successful businesses. He seemed most proud of his non-political, personal friendship with the late President Ronald Reagan. Somehow Dana's magnetic personality led to relaxing evenings at the White House and Camp David discussing matters unrelated to politics. I suppose all of us have need of a friend that is outside our everyday lives. But, to imagine being a personal friend of the President of the United States is truly amazing to me. I think President Reagan was a lucky guy!
