1819 World Events
In 1819, in the year that Daniel M. Baker was born, on January 2nd, the first major peacetime financial crisis in the United States began. Called The Panic of 1819, banks created a crisis when they began foreclosing on heavily mortgaged farms and businesses.
In 1848, on February 21st, The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels - German philosophers - was published in London. The pamphlet said that "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles".
In 1865, on January 31st, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was narrowly passed by the House (it was passed by the Senate over nine months earlier). The 13th Amendment outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude - the exception being for punishment for a crime.
In 1873, on February 12th, The Coinage Act of 1873 was signed by President Ulysses S. Grant. It went into effect on April 1st and ended the use of gold and silver in the U.S. for currency - placing the country on the gold standard. The Act wasn't popular with everyone.
In 1942, due to World War II, automobile production in the United States was stopped on February 1st. A tire rationing program had begun the month before. Detroit - the main hub of car manufacturing - was ordered to free up assembly lines for military production. The president of the Automobile Manufacturers Association said “The automotive industry is in this war all the way". Some dealerships had to close and others expanded their repair shops. The used car market boomed (as did a black market in used cars).
