John was the second son of Daniel McDonald and Alice Moorhouse. His parents both immigrated to Australia Daniel from Scotland and Alice from Yorkshire. They met and married in Yankalilla South Australia. They had 7 children 2 of whom died young. Their eldest son William Daniel Moorhouse McDonald stayed in SA and the rest of the family moved to the goldfields of Victoria. Both Daniel and Alice died and are buried in Victoria
