Leek was born in 1838 in Chester Township, Morris County, New Jersey United States to Thomas Leek and Julia Ann Neighbor, and had siblings Mary Antoinette Leek, Lydia Etta Leek, Jane Emeline Leek, and Phebe Leek. He married Harriet A. Thorp, and had a child Lewalla Leek. Daniel Leek died at age 58 years old circa 1896.

In 1838, in the year that Daniel T. Leek was born, on May 26th, the Native American Cherokee Nation was forced to march the Trail of Tears - relocating them to west of the Mississippi. When gold was discovered in Georgia in 1828, settlers wanted the Cherokee land. 16,543 natives were forced to march - it is estimated that 2,000 to 6,000 died along the way.

In 1846, by the time he was merely 8 years old, on February 26th, the Liberty Bell was rung for George Washington's birthday. It is said that when it was rung, a previous crack was worsened, leading to the crack seen today. A paper of the time said that at "around noon, it was discovered that the ringing had caused the crack to be greatly extended, and that the old Independence Bell...now hangs in the great city steeple irreparably cracked and forever dumb".
