On September 24, 1921 he and his family departed from Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to the United States arriving in New York, New York. From there, they moved to and resided in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA. He was married to Katherine Heggie and they had a daughter together, Michelle Heggie.

He married Esteher on June 30, 1905 in Amherst, Hampshire, Massachusetts, USA. He returned to Scotland for some time and then came back to the US where he resided in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA. James passed away on January 3, 1945 in Springfield, MA. His mother Esther Clara Grant was born in 1885 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland and she grew up in Liff, Benvie and lnvergowrie, Angus, Scotland. She immigrated to the states and arrived in New York. New York on September 1, 1903. She married James in Massachusetts and then returned to Glasgow, Scotland on November 16, 1907. SHe had her son William and then came back to the US. Esther passed away on August 5, 1969 in Indian Orchard, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA.
