David Alexander Thom 1879 - 1916

David Thom was born on August 5, 1879 at Noble Hill, in Dumfries to William Thom and Helen Rutherford, and had siblings Agnes Thom, Samuel Thom, Annie Thom, William Thom, Edward Thom, Frances Thom, Helen Thom, Elizabeth Thom, and Catherine Thom. He was the parent of Sarah Paterson Thom. He married Margaret Isabella McWilliam Paterson, and they had children Edith Thom and Janet Thom. David Thom died at age 36 years old on May 13, 1916, and was buried at Bethune Town Cemetery V. C. 48. in Scotland.

In 1879, in the year that David Alexander Thom was born, on October 22nd, Thomas Edison tested the first practical electric light bulb. Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.

In 1886, he was merely 7 years old when on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
