Odd Fellows Lodge, Mt. Morgan Lodge foundation member, David A. Alsbury
By the recent death of Mr. David Ason Alsbury Mt Morgan and Yeppoon lost one of its most known and respected citizens. Born 83 years ago in Scotland, he came to Queensland with his parents when a lad, settling in Rockhampton. At the age of 23 he married Miss Wanstall, Rockhampton.
Later the young couple moved to Mt Morgan, where Mr Alsbury secured work as a winding engine driver and electrician with the late Mt Morgan Gold Mining Company. His first wife predeceased him 50 years ago. Later he married his second wife at Mt Morgan. Later he went to Yeppoon, where he kept the Pacific Hotel for 10 years. Relinquishing the hotel business, he went in for banana cultivation with fair success at Yeppoon. Selling out, he returned to his old home town, Mt Morgan, where his second wife predeceased him some years ago.
James Alsbury was a foundation member of the Mt Morgan Manchester Unity Oddfellows' Lodge(I.O.O.F.).
In his younger days he was an outstanding Soccer football player. Of a happy and kindly nature, he was respected by all with whom he came in contact. Of the latter years he did not enjoy the best of health and passed away at the Mt Morgan Hospital on January 22. His funeral, which moved from the residence of his daughter Mrs. J. Gatton, James Street, was well attended. The Rev. Dale (Methodist) read the prayers at the house and graveside. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. G. Shaw (Mackay) and Mrs. Gatton (Mt .Morgan) and three sons, Messrs. W. Alsbury (Brisbane), James and Clavering (both of Newcastle).
