He was married to Lillian Claire Flinn in 1950 in Hempstead, Nassau County, and they were together until Lillian's death on March 30, 1998 in Jensen Beach, Martin County, Florida. He had children David Craig Flinn III, Keith John Flinn, Brian James Flinn, and Mark Alan Flinn. David Flinn died at age 74 years old on December 14, 2002 in Jensen Beach, Martin County, and was buried on December 21, 2002 at Calverton National Cemetery in Wading River, Suffolk County, NY.

In 1928, in the year that David Craig Flinn Jr was born, aviatrix Amelia Earhart, age 31, became the first woman to fly solo across North America and back in August. In June, she had been part of a 3 man crew that flew the Atlantic Ocean but since she had no instrument training, she couldn't fly the plane - she kept the flight log. The North American flight became one of her many "firsts" as a female pilot.

In 1932, at the age of just 4 years old, David was alive when five years to the day after Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic, Amelia Earhart flew solo from Newfoundland to Ireland, the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo and the first to replicate Lindbergh's feat.
