David Grim Colclaser 1880 - 1968

David Grim Colclaser of Sharon, Mercer County, PA was born on December 25, 1880 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County to Sarah M. Spangler and Stewart Colclaser. He had siblings Levi Annas Colclaser, Stewart McKee Colclaser, Hazel Colclaser, and Mary Virtue Colclaser. He was in a relationship with Mary Alma Smith, and had children Lewis Paul Colclaser, Raymond L. Colclaser, James Stewart Colclaser, and Robert Gerald Colclaser. David Colclaser died at age 87 years old in January 1968, and was buried in Wilkins Township.

In 1880, in the year that David Grim Colclaser was born, in October, the "Blizzard of 1880" began in North America - considered the most severe winter ever known in the US. Many areas were snowbound throughout the whole winter, which was made famous in Laura Ingalls Wilder's book The Long Winter.

In 1903, David was 23 years old when the silent film, The Great Train Robbery opened. Although it was filmed in Milltown, New Jersey, it was a Western. Twelve minutes long, the film used a lot of innovative techniques - some scenes were hand colored and composite editing, on-location shooting, and frequent camera movement were used. Its budget was $150 (about $4000 currently) and was the most popular film until 1915 when Birth of a Nation was released.
