David Hartstein was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of Benjamin Morris Hartstein of Radomyschl in the Ukraine, and Fannie Katz, of Slavuta in the Ukraine. He married Naomi (Anne) Rice of Winnipeg, Canada. and had Charles born in 1954. David owned Hart's Sign Painiting shop on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. His brothers were Max and Theodore (Ted).
