    The Age. Melbourne. 27th March 1916. DEATH OF MR. DAVID MITCHELL. The death occurred on Saturday afternoon, at Dr. O'Hara's private hospital, of Mr. David Mitchell, one of the fast disappearing band of old colonists, and father of Madame Melba. The late Mr. Mitchell, who was one of the most successful business men of Melbourne, was 88 years of age. He was born in Forfarshire, Scotland, and arrived in Melbourne in 1852. He entered upon business as a builder and contractor, and in that capacity had a long and successful career. Some of the finest buildings in Melbourne were erected by him, notably Scots' Church, National Bank, Equitable Building, the Exhibition, Masonic Hall,

Patented by Morse in 1837, the electrical telegraph used a code developed by him and his assistant, Samuel Vail, and sent a message two miles. In 1844, Morse broadcast from Washington DC to Baltimore Maryland the message "What hath God wrought" and the telegraph took off.
