David Samuel Waterson of Coburg, City of Merri-bek County, VIC Australia was born in 1868 in Darlingford. He was married to Sarah Ann Foots Waterson in 1899, and had children Irene Myrtle Jane Waterson, Gladys Maud (Waterson) Urquhart, Harold Hamilton Waterson, and Roy David Lawrence Waterson. David Waterson died at age 74 years old in 1942 in Coburg.

In 1868, in the year that David Samuel Waterson was born, on July 9th, The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified. The Fourteenth Amendment guaranteed African Americans full citizenship and equal protection under the law. It also gave all persons in the United States due process of law. The former Confederate states hotly contested the amendment but were forced to go along so that they could regain representation in Congress

In 1877, he was merely 9 years old when on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.
