He married Avice Ella (Jackson) Gaunson in 1900, and had children Mary Isabel (Gaunson) Schofield, David Latimer Gaunson, John Grant Gaunson, Francis Reginald Gaunson, Elizabeth Margaret (Gaunson) Morkel, Nancy Christina (Gaunson) Meadows, Thomas Ian Gaunson, Antony Gaunson, and Andrew Stewart Gaunson. David Gaunson died at age 66 years old on March 7, 1946 at Kingsford NSW, Australia in Kingsford, City of Randwick County, NSW, and was buried at Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park 12 Military Rd, in Matraville.

Lasting 13½ hours before burning out, it used a "a carbon filament or strip coiled and connected to platina contact wires". He applied for a patent on November 4th, receiving the patent in January 1880.
