    Rock Island resident and Warren County native Delma Ruth Womack, 84, died at River Park Hospital after an extended illness. A homemaker and a member of New Bybee Methodist Church, she was the daughter of John Monroe and Lola Mae Yates Hash; and was preceded in death in 1998 by her husband Marvin Womack who she wed Dec. 24, 1938. She was also preceded in death by daughter, Donna Faye Robinson; four brothers and two sisters. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Betty Womack of Rock Island; son-in-law, Duane Robinson of Smithville; grandchildren and their spouses, Joan and Bill Dobson, and Joel Womack, all of Rock Island, Karen and Chris Young of Campaign, and Brian Robinson of Smithville; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Kelsey Young; and brother, Bobby Hash. Graveside services will be held at 3p today at Old Bybee Cemetery with Joey Spicer officiating. Visitation will be held from 10a-2p today at High's. High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The 18th Amendment established Prohibition - a law against the production, transport, and sale of alcohol. Private consumption and possession were not prohibited. Several months later, the Volstead Act was passed, creating laws to enforce the Amendment. Bootlegging and bathtub gin followed.

Houdini was the most famed magician of his time and perhaps of all time, especially for his acts involving escapes - from handcuffs, straitjackets, chains, ropes slung from skyscrapers, and more. He was president of the Society of American Magicians and stringently upheld professional ethics. He died of complications from a ruptured appendix. Although he had received a blow to the area a couple of days previously, the connection between the blow and his appendicitis is disputed.
