Delmar Lavern Bendorf was born in Omaha to Fred Oliver Bendorf (1891-1964) and Elsie Estella "Stella" Stolp (1899-1970), and had seven siblings including Dorothy May (1918-1996), Jimmy (born 1919), Fred Oliver Jr. (1920-1997), James E. (1921-2013), Katherine (1922-1965) and John Henry Bendorf (1924-2003). He married Virginia Ali Boese (1928-2007) in 1952.
