Donald Hudson Purcell was born to Martin Warren Purcell (1879 - 1919) and Evelyn Lillie Purcell (1893 - 1972). Both of his parents were born in Iowa. Donald had one brother, Martin James Purcell (1918 - 1997) and three half-siblings, including brothers James Herman Shaff (1922 - 2020), David O. Shaff (1924 - 2011), and a half sister. A World War II veteran, Donald served in the Army AIr Corps and also had served with the Office of Strategic Services. During the Korean War, he served with Air Force Intelligence. Donald Purcell married Marjorie Anne Chaney (1920 - 2014) on June 28, 1947 in Rock Island County, Illinois and they had one daughter, Kathleen.

Donald was Caucasian of English Canadian heritage. His parents were born in Iowa but his paternal grandmother was born in Canada.

A native of Clinton, Iowa, Donald was raised in Clinton, moving to Camanche in Clinton County when he was seven years old. Donald remained in Iowa the rest of his live, living in Clinton, Camanche, Rock Island, and Moline. He was a lifelong resident of Iowa.

When he was 22, Donald said that he had completed one year of college.

Donald's memorial services were at Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island, Illinois. He was a member of the church.

Donald was a veteran of the Army Air Corps and Air Force Intelligence. He served during World War Ii with the Office of Strategic Services and during the Korean War with Air Force intelligence.

When he was 22, Donald was working as a dairyman. Later, he worked as a district manager and sales representative of Investors Diversified Services (I.D.S.) for 38 years. He retired in 1979.

Donald served on the board of trustees and was deacon at his church. He was also a member of Breakfast Optimist Club of Moline and Sigma Chi fraternity. He participated in numerous community services, including Meals on Wheels. He also enjoyed sports and was an avid reader. Donald was married Marjoried Chaney and they had a daughter, Kathleen. When he passed, he was survived by two grandchildren.
