He also married Ona Velva Wilmajean (Croxton) Coate, and they had children Eddith Marie (Coate) Nelson, Donald Joseph Coate, Jr, and Betty Jean (Coate) Mesch. Donald Coate died at age 88 years old on June 25, 2005 in Wellington, Sumner County, KS.

  • Obituary

    Don J. Coate, 88, retired custodian, of Wellington, Kansas died Saturday, June 25, 2005 at his residence. Don was born the son of Joseph C. and Cora Eddith (Cain) Coate on January 25, 1917 in Canadian, Texas. In 1920, Don and his family moved from Texas to Wellington, Kansas and later moved to Wichita, Kansas in 1923. He completed all of his schooling in Wichita, Kansas and graduated form Wichita North High School with the class of 1936. Don and Wilma Jean Croxton were married in 1938 and had three children; Marie, Donald Joe and Betty Jean Coate. He later married Della Williams and welcomed her two children, Nancy and Carl into his family. In 1996, Don decided to move from Tennessee back to Wellington, Kansas to be closer to his family. He was preceded in death by his wife Della; parents; brothers, Clarence V., Loniel Wayne, and Marion Walton; and sister Gwendolyn. Don is survived by his sons; Don Coate of Littleton, Colorado and Carl Williams of Wichita, Kansas, daughters; Marie Nelson of Denver, Colorado, Betty Mesch of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Nancy Michael of Wyoming. A memorial service for Don will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 1, 2005 at the Vantage Point Apartments, 1030 College, Wellington, Kansas 67152. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Cremation has been effected and there will be no visitation planned.
