    Donald's father was John Henry Savage (1878 - 1936), born in Ohio, and his mother was Edna May Hayden (1882 - 1950), also born in Ohio. He had siblings Gladys, Florence, Mary, John, Edna, and June. When Donald was 10, he was living with his parents in Cleveland Ohio on 71st Street. Dad John was 50 and Mom Edna was 46. Also in the household were Mabel, a sister-in-law, 32, Gladys, 22, Florence, 20, Mary, 18, John, 16, Edna, 14, and June, 6. Dad John was a crane operator in a steel manufacturing company, Gladys was a stenographer at an insurance company, Florence was a telephone operator, Mary was a stenographer at a credit company, and son John was an Errand boy at a printing company. Sister-in-law Mabel was a private nurse. When Donald was 21, he completed a World War II draft registration card in Cayuga Ohio. He was working for American Diners Company in Cleveland and living in Cleveland Ohio with his next of kin, his mother. Donald was 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed 165 pounds, had blue eyes and blonde hair, and a "light" complexion. He had a scar on the left side of his forehead. A veteran of World War II, Donald enlisted on September 1 1942 and was discharged on November 19, 1945. Donald married Rita Gertrude Eberl (1922 - 2015) in Cuyahoga, Ohio. They had 4 daughters and 3 sons. When Donald was 29, he was married and living in Euclid Ohio with wife Rita, 27, and children James, 2 and John, 1. Also in the household were Donald's father-in-law, Julius Eberl, 58, and Donald's sister-in-law Martha Eberl, 18. Donald was a "paint sprayer" in elevator manufacturing, Julius was a laborer at a storage dock, and Martha was a secretary for a printing company.

In 1920, in the year that Donald J Savage was born, on November 2, radio station KDKA began broadcasting in Pittsburgh, PA. This was the first commercial radio broadcast in the United States. Westinghouse, a leading manufacturer of radios and the backer of the station, chose the date because of the Presidential election. People liked it because they could hear about the results of the election between Harding and Cox before the morning papers arrived. Four years later, there were 600 commercial stations broadcasting in the U.S.

In 1934, at the age of only 14 years old, Donald was alive when on July 22nd, gangster John Dillinger was killed in Chicago. His gang had robbed banks and police stations, among other charges, and he was being hunted by J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI - although many in the public saw him as a "Robin Hood". A madam from a brothel in which he was hiding became an informer for the FBI and, after a shootout with FBI agents, Dillinger was shot and died.
