He was the parent of Diane Elizabeth Halsted, Benjamin Charles Halsted, and Beth Carol Wyman. He married Natalie Leslie Halsted circa 1981 in East Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ, and they were married until Donald's death on February 13, 2014 in Clinton, Hunterdon County. They had a child Alicea Nicole Zelesny.

Donald L. Halsted,80,of Bethlehem Township,died on February 14,2014,at his home. Born in Muir,Michigan,on March 21,1933,son of Walter and Leona Halsted,Donald moved to New Jersey in 1963 when he took a position as an associate professor at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick. He taught sociology of education for 36 years. He was the department chairman for a number of years and was active as a grievance counselor for the AAUP. Donald is survived by his wife,Natalie;his son,Benjamin Halsted and his wife Deborah of Littleton,CO;daughter,Beth Wyman and her husband Paul of Centennial,CO;daughter,Alicea Zelesny and her husband William of Pittstown;daughter Diane Halsted and her husband Mohammad Farooq of Edison;his grandchildren,Erik and Kiera Halsted,Alex and Megan Wyman,and Yasmeen and Shan Farooq. Donald served the Bethlehem Township Board of Adjustment for many years. He was also on the Hunterdon County Allocations Committee,and was on the Board of Directors of United Way of Hunterdon. He enjoyed gardening,cooking,baking bread and his pets. Memorial contributions can be made to United Way of Hunterdon or the Flemington Area Food Pantry.

In 1933, in the year that Donald Lee Halsted was born, on March 4th, Franklin Delano Roosevelt became the 32nd President of the United States. He was elected four times (equaled by no other President) and guided the United States through the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and World War 2. His wife was his cousin Eleanor Roosevelt (Teddy Roosevelt's niece) who President Truman called "First Lady of the World". Some of the major programs that survive from his presidency are the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Wagner Act (The National Labor Relations Act of 1935) , the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Social Security.
