He enlisted in the military on September 14, 1940, at Ft Thomas Newport, Kentucky. He joined the Infantry branch of the military and started as a Private in the Regular Army. His enlistment was for the Philippine Department, which was a geographical unit of the United States Army in the Pacific. He married Dicie Virginia Belle Perkins (1922–1991) on October 13, 1984 in Boyd, Kentucky, USA. They were married for seven years before she passed away on October 16, 1991. Donald Marcum passed away about a month after his wife on November 13, 1991.

His enlistment was for the Philippine Department, which was a geographical unit of the United States Army in the Pacific. It is likely that Marcum was sent to the Philippines as part of the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE), which was established in July 1941. However, the USAFFE suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Japanese during the Battle of the Philippines in 1941-1942. Many soldiers were captured, and others went into hiding as guerrillas. It is not clear what happened to Marcum during the war or how long he served. However, it is possible that he saw combat in the Philippines or other parts of the Pacific theater. Marcum's service to the country during World War II was undoubtedly a vital contribution to the war effort, and his bravery and sacrifice are undoubtedly commendable.
