Did you know?
In 1907, in the year that Donald Mcfarland was born, in October, over a 3 week period, the New York stock exchange fell almost 50% from the previous year's high mark. Public panic ensued and there were runs on banks since the U.S. was in the middle of a recession. J.P. Morgan offered his own fortune to back the banks and he was followed by other financiers. This temporarily shored up the banking system, stopping the immediate panic. All of this led to the creation of the Federal Reserve.

In 1919, by the time he was only 12 years old, Indian lawyer Mahatma Gandhi initiated the Satyagraha campaigns, beginning the nonviolent resistance movement against British rule of India. Satyagraha means "holding onto truth" and the campaign for India independence, which was eventually obtained, called for "self-suffering" rather than inflicting suffering (i.e., violence) on others.

What Life Was Like 100 Years Ago in 1917
In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson was just beginning his second term in office, and the United States entered the 'Great War' World War I which began in Europe three years earlier. Women were still seeking the right to vote and labor and race disputes (and riots) were common. Tsar Nicholas II abdicated and Lenin and the Bolsheviks took over Russia, making it a communist country. While technology and fashion have drastically changed, the challenges people face remain much the same. There was war, protests and strikes, racial unrest, and America began its path of "making the world safe for democracy" in the words of President Wilson. These are the pictures of everyday life in 1917.
