    He was born at 2.40 a.m. on the 1st January 1884 at 130 Watt Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, a British subject. At the time of the 1891 census he was living at Carrick Street, Blythswood, Glasgow. The 1901 census showed him at Govan, Glasgow. At his re-enrolment into the Royal Naval Reserve on the 1st August 1908 he was living at 45 Lambhill Street, Glasgow. On the 11th July 1914 he was engaged by the Union Steamship Company at Sydney, New South Wales. At the time of his attestation on the 14th February 1915 he was living at Voleas Road, Lyttleton, New Zealand. His military record indicates that on the 30th December 1918 he was living at 34 Vogel Street, Richmond, Christchurch, New Zealand, on the 15th November 1919 at 41 Crosby Street, Mornington, Dunedin, New Zealand and on the 15th July 1920 at 50 Webb Street, Wellington, New Zealand. The marriage register shows him as living on the 15th June 1922 at 185 Richardson Street, Middle Park, Victoria. The transcription of his death certificate gives his address on the 24th September 1939 as 17 Little Page Street, Albert Park, Victoria.

  • Religious Beliefs

    He was described in his army record as a Presbyterian and married in a Presbyterian ceremony.
  • Military Service

    On the 14th February 1915 he was attested for service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, initially in C Company, 5th Reinforcements. On the 20th September 1918 he was classified as unfit and was discharged from the 1st Company, 2nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry Regiment on the 17th January 1919.
  • Professional Career

    He was a merchant seaman, being rated an able seaman at the time of his death. He served in the Royal Naval Reserve from 1900 to 1904 and from 1st August 1908 to May 1914, when he was discharged for failure to comply with regulations. At a later stage of his life he worked for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand.
