Donald Victor Carpenter of Tampa, Fla., and formerly of Hagerstown, Md., went home to be with the Lord at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, due to complications from a stroke. Born July 10, 1935 in Hagerstown he was the son of the late Ira Carpenter and Lydia Hose Carpenter. He attended Hagerstown High School. Don worked for Charlton Brothers Transportation in Hagerstown as a truck driver for 42 years as a truck driver, until his retirement in 1996. Don loved driving and meeting people. He was a member of Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship in Cearfoss and a former member of Broadfording Church of God. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Jean Anderson Carpenter on May 1, 2008, whom he married June 5, 1954 by Rev. Petre, Broadfording Church Road. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice and Catherine Carpenter and Dorothy Carpenter McKee; one brother, Harold Carpenter; one granddaughter; and three great-grandchildren. He was survived by daughters, Donna Gossard of Hagerstown; Judy Hoffman of Clear Spring; and Penny Clark of Tampa; grand-daughters, Amy Rowland of Sharpsburg; Jill Swope of Martinsburg; Beth Miller and Rebecca Hoffman of Clear Spring; Rachel Clark and Sarah Clark of Tampa; sister, Hazel Brewer of Hagerstown; father-in-law, Glen Whitman of Williamsport; sisters-in-law, Shirley Sharp of Port Orange, FL.; Ava Mussolino of Hagerstown; Anita Saloom of Falling Waters, WV; brother-in-law, Charles Anderson of Hagerstown; long-time friends, Gene and Evelyn O'Dell; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Don requested any memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 or to www.alz.org. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
