  • Introduction

    Dora was the mother of ten children. She kept the family alive with her love and compassion for her children. Her husband ,Brooks, was an alcoholic for many years. She had to work miracles to have enough dollars availability from her alcoholic husband, who always had a decent paying job, to feed and cloths the children. But most important, because of her love, discipline, integrity shown her children, they all grew up to be college graduates and successful adults. She was the hero of her children and sorely missed by all.

In 1914, in the year that Dora Francis Moody Barker was born, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor.

In 1922, when she was merely 8 years old, the Lincoln Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C. on May 30th. More than 35,000 people attended the dedication including Lincoln's son, Robert Todd Lincoln, and many Union and Confederate veterans - although the audience was segregated. The Memorial took 10 years to complete.
