Doris Bender (Bender Rothschild) Steadly's History: 1989 - 1989

Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

She was the oldest of 7 children, 6 sisters and 4 brothers that emigrated to the United States from Poland. She and her family lived a difficult life in a shtetl, ghetto for Jewish peoples, persecuted for being Jewish by the Nazis and the bordering Russian Cossacks that persecuted and attacked their livlihoods, and humanity constantly under the German Socialist Republic prior to Hitler's Reign of Terror that permeated Eastern Europe and spread like a cancer to western Europe. Doris, took on the role of caring for her 7 sisters and brothers, when their mother, Chana Biolowaska, died from the Spanish FLu after helping a friend who was sick. Dorils lovingly took care of Ceil, Ida, Ruth, and brothers, Abraham, Michael, and Samuel Bender when the mother died of SPanish Flu. The grandfather was Barney Bender. Doris was a renaissance woman, way ahead of her time, and had married Abraham Steadly, a kind and generous Jewish person from the Pale of Russia. He adored Doris and they had two daughters, Hilda(Hildegarde) and Marilyn(Marushka) who thrived in the United States, with the rest of the Benders. They prospered and the daughters, Hilda and Marilyn went on to wed and have their own children, Linda and Jeffrey Dubin(father, Alvin Dubin) and Marilyn married Harry Froim in 1946 and adopted Sherri Ann Becker Froim when she was 6 months old from Louise Wise Jewish Children's Agency. Sherri is married to Robert Kramerson and they have 2 fraternal twin daughters, Lori and Alanna Kramerson, both born on 4/30/1981. Alanna married Joe Seamans on 10/10/10 in Ithaca, New York. The grandchildren include two female daughters. And so, Doris Steadly's legacy lives on in her granddaighters and grandsons. She was a woman dynamo and very much in love with all the family.

  • Ethnicity & Family History

She lived in Poland on the border with Russia in a very cramped Jewish shtetl, (ghetto where all Jewish families were forced to live, despite their status in life, nor their contributions to society or concern for other Gentiles). Life was difficult and hard for Jewish families. They were persecuted pre-Hitler's reigh by German Social Democrats. Businesses were destroyed, people were randomly dehumanized, and randomly shot in public. Their lives were made very difficult to practice Jewish traditions and family ways in private and public domains. The family emigrated to Ellis Island , and then to Brooklyn, New York and settled in 515 east 54th Street(Kings Highway neighborhood of Flatbush, Brooklybn, New York City. My grandfather, Abraham had driven a car and worked as a dairy salesman for Breakstone Dairy Company. My grandmother took care of the sisters and brothers, later their sons and daughters, and then the grandchildren, Sherri Froim, Jeffrey and Linda Dubin. Doris was Caucasian as was her husband, Abraham Steadly(nee Stenefsky). I believe her grandparents came from Poland. They emigrated to the United States via boat and moved to Brooklyn, New York.
