  • Introduction

Dorothy Lorraine Woods Kenion, my mother was Doris Howard Downings' sister. From the time I can remember, every summer (until 1958) my mother's Grandmother (Wilbert Howard's mother, Lillie Blum Bowen Howard) would send for my Sister and me. Dot, as we called her, would pick us up from Norfolk, Virginia (Mama's and Daddy's house.) It was summer break for Norfolk State College. We would stay the whole summer. Wilbert Howard was my mom's and Dot's father. My Mother's Mom was Josephine Cleo Chesson Woods Norman. She was kind, caring, and beautiful, a loving grandma inside and out. Just like grandma Lillie (Sis). Papa (Walter Howard) would spend time with us when we went to Plymouth, N.C. for summer vacation. We were never told about his death nor Grandma Lillie's death. Didn't even know when Dot died. The Summer of 1958 was the last time we spent the summer in Plymouth. When Wilbert died, our GREAT Aunt,Mabel ( took us to Doris's house. She was not very happy to see us. We were teenagers by that time. I remember going into her kitchen where she was cooking and speaking. I don't remember whether she spoke or not. However, my feelings were hurt. Footnote: The last summer we visited (1958) Dot's husband's daughter told us that Dot talked badly about us and didn't like my sister and me. She was mean too. We were young, but looking back, that summer was when I realized the hypocrisy adults could hide. We loved her, but we know now that showing love may not be true LOVE. Hopefully, the two children she adopted and the children she taught as a teacher, gave her unconditional love. We all need love. Dot did too. May she rest in peace.
