Doris Irene Crosbie of Creswick, VIC Australia was born in 1897 in Creswick to Agnes Louisa (Quarrell) Crosbie and Alexander Crosbie. She had siblings Elizabeth Alice (Crosbie) Felstead, David Young Crosbie, Francis Leslie Crosbie, Agnes Rubina (Crosbie) Rickard, and Donald Gordon Crosbie. Doris Crosbie married Frederick Percy Long in 1933, and died at age 84 years old on July 15, 1982 in Greensborough.

In 1897, in the year that Doris Irene Crosbie was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Virginia's father had told her that "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." So she wrote to the Sun, asking if there was a Santa Claus. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

In 1915, when she was 18 years old, in May, the RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German torpedo. The Lusitania was a British passenger ship that was sailing from New York to Liverpool England. She sank in 18 minutes - 1,198 died and 761 survived. While travelers were the main casualty - and commodity - the Lusitania did carry wartime weapons. "Remember the Lusitania" became the rallying cry of World War 1.
